Michael Garver Oxley (born February 11, 1944 – died January 1, 2016) was an American politician. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served as a U.S. Representative for the 4th congressional district of Ohio.
Early Life and Education
Michael Oxley was born in Findlay, Ohio. He went to Miami University and earned a degree in 1966. Later, he studied law at Ohio State University, finishing in 1969.
From 1969 to 1972, Oxley worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The FBI is a government agency that investigates crimes. After this, he became active in the Ohio Republican Party. He served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1973 to 1981. This is part of Ohio's state government.
Serving in Congress
In 1981, Michael Oxley was elected as a U.S. Representative. He won a special election to fill a spot that became open. He started serving in the U.S. Congress in June 1981.
He became the chairman of the Committee on Financial Services. This committee deals with laws about money and banks. He helped create an important law called the Sarbanes–Oxley Act in 2002. This law made new rules for companies to be more honest. It helped prevent big financial problems.
Oxley announced he would retire from Congress on November 1, 2005. He left his position at the end of his term in 2007. Another Republican, Jim Jordan, took his place.
After Congress
After leaving Congress, Oxley worked for NASDAQ, a stock market company. He also became a partner at a law firm called BakerHostetler in Washington, D.C.. Later, he worked as a lobbyist for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. This group helps regulate the stock market.
Later Life and Legacy
Michael Oxley faced health challenges later in his life. He passed away in McLean, Virginia, on January 1, 2016.
His home town honored him in several ways. The post office in Findlay, Ohio, is named after him. Also, a part of US 30 in Hancock County is called "Congressman Michael G. Oxley Memorial Highway."
