Milo Smith Hascall (born August 5, 1829 – died August 30, 1904) was an American soldier. He also worked as a banker and in real estate. During the American Civil War, he was a general in the Union Army.

Early Life and Career

Milo S. Hascall was born in LeRoy, New York. In 1846, he moved to Goshen, Indiana. There, he worked in a store and taught at a school.

Two years later, he joined the United States Military Academy. He graduated in 1852. He became a second lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Artillery. He was stationed in Newport Harbor, Rhode Island. After one year, he left the army.

Hascall returned to Goshen, Indiana. He became a lawyer and held several public jobs. He also worked as a railroad contractor and a county court clerk. He practiced law from 1855 to 1861.

Civil War Service

When the Civil War began, Hascall joined the army as a private. Soon, he became a captain and helped organize six volunteer regiments. On June 12, 1861, he was made a colonel of the 17th Indiana Infantry. He took part in the successful West Virginia campaign.

In December 1861, he moved to Louisville, Kentucky. He commanded a brigade of four regiments. His troops arrived at the Battle of Shiloh after the fighting ended. However, they did take part in the Siege of Corinth.

Becoming a Brigadier General

Hascall became a brigadier general on April 25, 1862. He was transferred to the Army of the Cumberland. He led a brigade during the Kentucky Campaign. He continued to serve in Tennessee until March 1863.

During the Battle of Stones River, Hascall took command of the 1st Division. This happened when General Wood was injured. Hascall led troops to the Round Forest. He decided this area had to be held at all costs.

After the battle, he went to Indianapolis, Indiana. He was in charge of the District of Indiana. His job was to find soldiers who had left the army without permission. He also stopped some newspapers from publishing articles that went against the government.

Later Campaigns

He then joined the Army of the Ohio. He commanded the 3rd Division in the XXIII Corps. Later that year, he helped defend Knoxville during the Siege of Knoxville.

In 1864, Hascall commanded the 2nd Brigade for part of the Atlanta Campaign. During the battle of Resaca, his brigade faced challenges. On May 18, Hascall took command of the 2nd Division. He led this division for the rest of the Atlanta Campaign.

Life After the War

Milo Smith Hascall left the army on October 27, 1864. He went back to Goshen, Indiana, and worked in banking. Later, he moved to Chicago, Illinois, and started a real estate business.

He was buried at Forest Home Cemetery in Forest Park, Chicago.
