Minden is a town located in Montgomery County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 4,297 people lived there. The town is on the western side of the county. The Mohawk River runs along its northern border. Minden also had a post office for over 100 years, from 1802 to 1903.

History of Minden

People from Europe first settled in this area around 1748. The town was likely named after a place called Minden in Germany. Many of the first European settlers in the 1700s were Palatine Germans. These were Protestants who came to New York seeking safety from religious wars. Queen Anne's government helped them travel to New York. In return, they worked in camps along the Hudson River, making supplies for England's navy.

During the American Revolution, rebel colonists built a small fort in 1778 in a village called Fort Plain. In 1780, this village was attacked by people loyal to Britain (called Tories) and their Native American allies. They burned and destroyed parts of the community. However, they could not defeat the defenders inside the fort.

After the war, the town of Minden was officially created in 1798. It was formed from a larger area known as the Town of Canajoharie. This was a farming area, important for growing crops and raising dairy cows.
