Minford's History
The community of Minford started in 1859. It was first called Harrisonville. However, its name had to be changed in 1917. This happened because the C&O Railroad was being built, and there was already another town named Harrisonville along the railway line.
The new name, Minford, was chosen to honor a local family with that name.

Minford is located in a beautiful area with rolling hills. These hills are part of the Appalachian Plateau. This region is sometimes called the "Little Smokies" because it looks a bit like the famous Appalachian Mountains. You can see these hills especially in nearby Shawnee State Park and Forest.

The Little Scioto River flows right next to Minford, on its eastern side. This river continues south through the Minford area. Eventually, it reaches Sciotoville and flows into the larger Ohio River.

State Route 139
Minford's main business and postal area is along South SR 139. From here, New Boston is about 10 miles (16 km) south. If you go north, Jackson is a little over 21 miles (34 km) away. State Route 335 also crosses this road.
State Route 335
Minford's business and school district is located along South SR 335. Sciotoville is about 7 miles (11 km) south. State Route 32 is a bit over 14 miles (22.5 km) north. SR 139 crosses this road, as do Lucasville-Minford Road and Bennett Road.
Lucasville-Minford Road
Lucasville-Minford Road is an important route for trucks and people traveling through the countryside. It connects US 23 in Lucasville to SR 335 in Mule Town, heading towards Minford. It then continues to US 52 in Sciotoville. Part of this road becomes SR 728 near the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.
High Street
High Street is a shorter road, just over 1 mile (1.6 km) long. It helps trucks and commuters get from SR 335 to Lucasville-Minford Road in Mule Town. SR 139 also crosses High Street.

Minford Post Office
Minford is home to the fifth post office ever built in Scioto County. The original building is no longer there. A new post office was built in its place in 2000. This post office is located at the corner of SR 139 and West Street. High Street is on its east side.

Minford has its own local telephone company. This company provides phone services to homes in Minford and Stockdale. They also offer internet services. You can get Dial-Up internet across all of Scioto County. For Minford and Stockdale, they offer faster DSL internet. The company has also started offering cable television and super-fast fiber optic internet. The phone company building is at the corner of SR 139 and High Street.

Minford Schools
Over the years, many schoolhouses have served the Minford area. Some old schools included the Sunshine School and the Harrisonville School, which opened in 1878.
Today, students in the Minford area attend schools within the Minford Local School District.
The first school specifically named "Minford" opened in 1923 on West Street. This building later became the Minford Middle School. It was torn down in 2005 after new school buildings were constructed. The new schools for the Minford Local School District were built between 1998 and 2004. Minford High School was finished in 2001, and the elementary and middle school buildings were completed in 2004.
Local Emergency Services
The Minford Volunteer Fire Department and the Minford EMS Squad are both located on State Route 335. The fire department was started in 1944. They help keep the community safe.
Portsmouth Bypass Freeway
A new highway called the Portsmouth bypass was built around Portsmouth. This road is officially named State Route 823. It's a four-lane highway that passes right next to Minford.
This 16-mile (25.7 km) long freeway helps drivers avoid going through the cities of Portsmouth and New Boston. It connects U.S. Route 23 north of Lucasville to U.S. Route 52 east of New Boston and west of Wheelersburg. There are two places where you can get on or off the bypass in Minford. One is near the Greater Portsmouth Regional Airport on State Route 335. The other is on Lucasville-Minford Road near Rases Mountain Drive.
