Montezuma is a city in Macon County, Georgia. Its ZIP code is 31063. In 2020, about 3,047 people lived there. This was a bit less than the 3,460 people in 2010. Montezuma is also home to a part of the Georgia Army National Guard. This group is called Bravo Company, 648th Engineers.

History of Montezuma

Montezuma started in 1851. This was when a railroad line was built to reach that spot. Soldiers returning from the Mexican-American War gave the city its name. They named it after a famous Aztec leader. The city officially became a city in 1854.

Montezuma also has a lively Mennonite community. This community began in the 1950s. About 10 to 15 Mennonite families moved here from Virginia.

Geography of Montezuma

Montezuma is in the southern part of Macon County. It is on the east side of the Flint River. Across the river to the west is Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe is the main town of Macon County.

Several state roads meet in Montezuma:

  • State Route 26 (Walnut Street) goes through the south side of the city. It leads east about 35 miles (56 km) to Hawkinsville. It goes west past Oglethorpe about 18 miles (29 km) to Ellaville.
  • State Route 90 goes through the center of Montezuma. It leads southeast about 21 miles (34 km) to Vienna. It goes northwest about 20 miles (32 km) to Rupert.
  • State Route 49 also passes through the city center. It leads northeast about 13 miles (21 km) to Marshallville. It goes southwest about 11 miles (18 km) to Andersonville.

The city covers about 4.6 square miles (12 km²). A small part of this, about 0.07 square miles (0.18 km²), is water.
