Montvale's History

Montvale became a borough on August 31, 1894. It was created from parts of two other areas: Orvil Township and Washington Township. Many new boroughs were formed in Bergen County around this time. This period was even called "Boroughitis."

Over the years, Montvale's borders changed a few times. It gained land from Orvil and Washington townships in 1896 and 1906. In 1912, it added land from Upper Saddle River. Later, in 1959 and 1965, some land was exchanged with River Vale and Upper Saddle River. The name "Montvale" comes from its hilly landscape. Montvale is also known as "The Pride of the Pascack Valley."
