Morbio Superiore was first written about in the year 1116. Back then, it was called Morbio de Supra.

Early Ownership and Churches

During the Middle Ages (around 1299), important religious groups owned the village. These included the main church in Como and a Benedictine monastery. Another church, S. Vittore in Balerna, also owned land here.

From 1591 until the 1600s, Morbio and Sagno shared a special church status. They were a 'vice parish' under the main church in Balerna. By 1802, Morbio Superiore became its own separate parish.

The main church, S. Giovanni Evangelista, was first mentioned in 1227. It was completely rebuilt in the 1700s and fixed up again in 1957.

Ancient Buildings and Changes

The Chapel of San Martino is a very old building. It was built in the Early Middle Ages in a style called Romanesque. It might even stand on the site of an old watchtower from the 500s. The Chapel of S. Anna was built much later, during the late Baroque period.

In the past, the village was known for its vineyards, tobacco, and mulberry trees. Today, only the vineyards remain. In recent years, Morbio Superiore has become a place where people live and travel to work elsewhere. Since 1960, the Cantonal Forestry School has been located nearby in Lattecaldo.
