Mount Islip (pronounced EYE-slip) is a tall mountain in the Angeles National Forest in California, United States. It stands at 8,250-foot (2,515 m) (about 2,515 meters) high. On a clear day, from the top of Mount Islip, you can see amazing views! You might spot the huge Mojave Desert, the busy Los Angeles Basin, and even islands far away like Santa Catalina Island and San Clemente Island.

This mountain is a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers. It's part of the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains range.

Exploring Mount Islip

How to Reach the Peak

There are a couple of main ways to start your hike up Mount Islip.

Islip Saddle Trailhead

One popular starting point is at a place called Islip Saddle. You can find this spot along the Angeles Crest Highway. It's about 53 miles (85 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles. This trailhead is well-known and often used by hikers.

Crystal Lake Trailhead

Another way to begin your climb is from the Crystal Lake Recreation Area. This area is located north of a town called Azusa. Both trailheads offer different paths to the summit, giving hikers options for their journey.

Amazing Views from the Top

When you reach the top of Mount Islip, you'll be treated to incredible panoramic views. Because the peak is so high and sharp, it offers clear sightlines in many directions.

What You Can See

  • Mojave Desert: To the north, you can see the vast, open spaces of the Mojave Desert. It looks like a huge, flat landscape stretching far into the distance.
  • Los Angeles Basin: Looking south, you'll see the sprawling urban area of the Los Angeles Basin. On a clear day, you can make out the city's buildings and roads.
  • Pacific Ocean Islands: Even further out, if the sky is very clear, you might be able to spot Santa Catalina Island and San Clemente Island in the Pacific Ocean. These islands are quite a distance away, making the view even more impressive!
