Mount Macbeth is a tall, snowy mountain in British Columbia, Canada. It stands at 2,639 meters (about 8,658 feet) high. This beautiful peak is found inside Garibaldi Provincial Park. It's part of the Coast Mountains, a large mountain range in western North America.

About Mount Macbeth

Mount Macbeth is a striking peak covered in glaciers. It's located in the Garibaldi Ranges, which are part of the larger Coast Mountains. Specifically, it belongs to the Spearhead Range. This mountain is about 14 kilometers (9 miles) southeast of Whistler. It is also 2 kilometers (1 mile) south of Tremor Mountain. Tremor Mountain is the highest point in the Spearhead Range.

Three glaciers surround Mount Macbeth. The Naden Glacier is on its eastern side. The Macbeth Glacier lies to the south. The Curtain Glacier flows down its northern slope. Water from these glaciers melts and drains into Fitzsimmons Creek. This creek then flows into the Cheakamus River.

Naming the Mountain

Mount Macbeth was named in 1964. An Alpine Club of Canada climbing group chose the name. They wanted to celebrate the 400th birthday of famous writer William Shakespeare. His play Macbeth is very well known. The name became official on August 27, 1965. This was decided by the Geographical Names Board of Canada.

First Climbers

The first time anyone successfully climbed Mount Macbeth was in 1969. A team of four climbers made this first ascent. They were P. Starr, E. Bass, B. Ellis, and P. Macec. They climbed the mountain using its northeast ridge. Today, many people climb Mount Macbeth as part of the Spearhead Traverse. This is a popular route for experienced mountaineers.

Weather at Mount Macbeth

Mount Macbeth is in a marine west coast climate zone. This means it gets a lot of rain and snow. Most weather systems come from the Pacific Ocean. They travel east towards the Coast Mountains. When they hit the mountains, the air is forced upwards. This causes the moisture to fall as rain or heavy snowfall.

Winters here can be very cold. Temperatures can drop below −20 °C (–4 °F). With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below −30 °C (–22 °F). The best time to visit Mount Macbeth for climbing is from July to September. The weather is usually much better during these months.
