Mount Werner is a tall mountain in the Park Range. This mountain range is part of the larger Rocky Mountains in North America. The very top of Mount Werner is called its summit.
This peak stands about 10,570 feet (3,222 meters) high. It is located inside Routt National Forest in Colorado, United States. Mount Werner is about 4.6 miles (7.4 kilometers) east of the city of Steamboat Springs. The mountain was given its current name in 1964 to honor a famous skier named Buddy Werner.

About Mount Werner
Mount Werner is located about 150 miles (241 kilometers) northwest of Denver, Colorado. The mountain's highest point is 10,570 feet (3,222 meters) above sea level. Its base is around 6,900 feet (2,103 meters) high. This means the mountain rises about 3,670 feet (1,119 meters) from its base to its top.
Mount Werner actually has five different peaks. From the lowest to the highest, these peaks are Christie Peak, Thunderhead Peak, Sunshine Peak, Storm Peak, and finally, Mount Werner itself.
Why the Name Changed
Mount Werner used to be known as Storm Mountain. In 1965, its name was changed to honor Buddy Werner. Buddy was an Olympic skier from Steamboat Springs. Sadly, he died in an avalanche in Switzerland in April 1964. Renaming the mountain was a way to remember him.
Water Flow from the Mountain
Water that flows off Mount Werner eventually reaches the Yampa River. The Yampa River then flows into the Green River. From there, the water joins the mighty Colorado River. Finally, the Colorado River empties into the Gulf of California in Mexico.
Steamboat Ski Resort
The Steamboat Ski Resort is a popular place for skiing and snowboarding. It operates on 2,965 acres (12 square kilometers) of Mount Werner. To get up the mountain, visitors can use the Silver Bullet gondola lift or one of the many chairlifts.
This resort is known for getting a lot of snow. It often receives some of the highest amounts of snow in Colorado. Over the last ten years, the resort has averaged about 334 inches (8.5 meters) of snow each year. A large part of the mountain and the ski resort are located within the Routt National Forest.
Mount Werner is also the home mountain of Arielle Gold. She is a world champion snowboarder and an Olympic bronze medalist.
