Mundon is a small village and civil parish located on the Dengie peninsula in Maldon District, Essex, England. It is about 3 miles south-east of the town of Maldon. The name 'Mundon' first appeared in the Domesday Book in 1086 as Munduna. This name means 'Munda's hill', likely referring to a person named Munda.
After the Norman Conquest of England, the land of Mundon was given to a Norman lord named Eudo Dapifer. Before that, it belonged to a king's noble called Godwin. Later, until the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries (when many religious buildings were closed), Mundon was part of the lands owned by St John's Abbey, Colchester. It then passed to Thomas Cromwell, a powerful figure in King Henry VIII's government, before returning to the Duchy of Lancaster, a large estate belonging to the British Crown.

Historic Buildings in Mundon
St. Mary's Church
The Church of St. Mary was built in the 14th century. It has a timber frame and stands within the old moat of Mundon Hall. It is thought to have been built on even older foundations from Saxon and Norman times. The church has not been used since the 1970s.
However, it is now looked after by the Friends of Friendless Churches, with help from English Heritage. After a lot of repair work, the church reopened to visitors in August 2009. The entire building was strengthened, and much of the structure was fixed. New windows were also put in, making the inside much brighter. This church is a very important historic building, listed as Grade I.
Mundon Hall
Today, Mundon Hall is an 18th-century farmhouse. It is made of brick that has been covered and painted white. This building stands where the original Mundon Hall once was.
Weather Events in Mundon
On November 23, 1981, Mundon was hit by a small tornado. This was part of a day when many tornadoes occurred across the United Kingdom, setting a record. The tornado that hit Mundon was classified as an F1/T2, which means it was a relatively weak tornado.
Mundon Furze Nature Area
Mundon Furze is one of the last remaining areas of very old woodland on the Dengie peninsula. The main types of trees you will find here are oak and ash.
The northern part of the Furze is mostly covered by Pedunculate Oak trees (Quercus robur). The ground beneath the trees is largely covered by Bramble (Rubus fruticosus). In some small, wet areas, you can also find plants like Pendulous Sedge (Carex pendula) and Soft rush (Juncus effusus). Some houses have been built in the southern part of this ancient wood.
White House Farm Canal
From 1832 until about 1880, a private canal was used to transport goods from White House Farm to the River Blackwater. This canal was a way for the farm to move its products more easily by water.
