Museum History

EcoDiscovery Center Expansion

In November 2011, the museum grew much bigger. It opened a huge new part called the EcoDiscovery Center. This expansion doubled the space for exhibits. It added exciting areas like the Everglades Airboat Adventure and Prehistoric Florida. You can also see Otters at Play and learn about storms. This new section also has special rooms for learning and a big space for temporary exhibits. A new Science Theater also opened at the same time.

What You Can Explore

The Museum of Discovery and Science is one of the biggest science museums in Florida. It welcomes more visitors than any other museum in the state. The museum has an amazing IMAX theater that shows incredible 3D IMAX movies.

Amazing Animals and Nature

A very popular part of the museum is seeing all the different animals from Florida. You can get quite close to many animals. These include otters, baby alligators, snakes, tortoises, rabbits, and bats. You might also see tarantulas, scorpions, geckos, and cockroaches.

Other creatures living at the museum are centipedes, hermit crabs, and many kinds of freshwater fish. There are also freshwater stingrays, black pacus, frogs, and tadpoles. You can also find alligator snapping turtles, other turtles, sharks, and saltwater fish. Don't forget the horseshoe crabs and a special sea turtle! The museum often has live animal shows or chances to meet these animals up close.

Besides the animals, the Museum of Discovery and Science has many other cool exhibits.

Special Features and Activities

The Museum of Discovery and Science moved to its current spot in downtown Fort Lauderdale in 1992. A main feature is the "Great Gravity Clock" outside the entrance. It's one of only three in the world, with the others in Japan and Mexico.

The museum is a great place for birthday parties. They also host special events like sea turtle walks and camp-ins. Plus, they have their own summer camp programs. The museum also has a volunteer program. This allows both kids and adults to help out and give back to the community.

The IMAX Theater
