A Special Welsh Mountain
For many years, Mynydd Graig Goch was not included in lists of Welsh mountains that are over 2,000 feet tall. This was because old maps from the Ordnance Survey (OS) showed its height as 609 meters. This is just a tiny bit less than 2,000 feet.
How Its Height Was Confirmed
In 2008, everything changed. A group of hikers used special GPS equipment to measure the mountain's height very carefully. They found its exact height is 609.75 meters, which is about 2000.49 feet! This meant Mynydd Graig Goch officially became known as the most westerly 2,000-foot peak in Wales.
Exploring the Summit
The top of Mynydd Graig Goch is covered with many large rocks and boulders. Several tall rock formations, called tors, stand out. One of these tors is the very highest point of the mountain.
Amazing Views and Wildlife
The southern and western sides of the mountain are also covered in huge fields of boulders. On the north-east side, there are steep cliffs. These cliffs form the back wall of a valley called Cwm Dulyn, which was carved out by a glacier long ago.
Inside Cwm Dulyn, there is a lake called Llyn Cwm Dulyn. This lake is home to a special type of fish called Arctic Char. These fish usually live in very cold, northern waters.
From the summit, you can see amazing views all around. You can look out over the Lleyn Peninsula and the coast. Other famous mountains like Garnedd Goch, Mynydd Mawr, Moel Hebog, and even Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) can be seen from here.
