Newport is a small village located in Herkimer County, New York, United States. It is found in the eastern part of the town of Newport. In 2020, about 543 people lived in the village. Newport is northeast of the city of Utica.

History of Newport

Early Settlement

The area that is now Newport was first known as the "Bowen Settlement." This name came from its founder, Benjamin Bowen. He bought the land around 1788. Benjamin Bowen worked to improve the land and invited other settlers to buy property there.

Village Incorporation

The village of Newport officially became a village in 1857. At that time, it was an important center for making and selling cheese.

Famous Residents and Historic Sites

Newport has been home to some notable people. One was Algernon Smith (1842 – 1876). He was an officer in the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment and died in the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

The village was also home to Linus Yale Sr. and Linus Yale Jr.. They were famous for making locks and inventing new lock designs. The Yale-Cady Octagon House and Yale Lock Factory Site is a historic place in Newport connected to their work.

Several other buildings in Newport are listed on the New York State and National Register of Historic Places. These include the Benjamin Bowen House, the Newport Stone Arch Bridge, the Masonic Temple — Newport Lodge No. 445 F. & A.M., and the Stuart Perry and William Swezey Houses. These places are important parts of the village's history.

Geography of Newport

Location and Waterways

Newport village is in the eastern part of the town of Newport. It sits on both sides of West Canada Creek. This creek flows into the Mohawk River. Most of the village center is on the eastern side of the creek.

The village covers about 1.5 square kilometers (0.59 square miles). Most of this area, about 1.4 square kilometers (0.53 square miles), is land. The rest, about 0.17 square kilometers (0.06 square miles), is water. This means about 10.87% of the village's total area is water.

Roads and Nearby Areas

New York State Route 28, also known as Main Street, runs north and south through Newport. It leads northwest about 4 miles (6.4 km) to Poland. It also goes southeast the same distance to Middleville. Herkimer, which is the county seat, is about 12 miles (19 km) south of Newport on NY 28. County Road 34 also passes through the part of Newport on the west side of West Canada Creek.

Natural Features

Brown Island is a small island located in West Canada Creek. It is found in the southern part of Newport.
