Nguyễn Tấn Dũng (born 17 November 1949) is a Vietnamese politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Vietnam from 2006 to 2016. The National Assembly chose him for this role on 27 June 2006. He was nominated by the previous Prime Minister, Phan Văn Khải. In 2011, Nguyễn Tấn Dũng was a top leader in the Communist Party of Vietnam. He stepped down as Prime Minister on 7 April 2016.

Early Life and Military Service

Nguyễn Tấn Dũng was born on 17 November 1949 in Cà Mau, a city in southern Vietnam. When he was 12, he joined the Vietcong. He helped with first-aid and communications. He also worked as a nurse and a doctor.

Serving in the Vietnam War

During the Vietnam War, he was wounded four times. He was later recognized as a wounded veteran. He served in the People's Army of Vietnam from 1961 to 1984. He fought in the south and west of Vietnam. He said he fought for "national independence." He also served in the Cambodian–Vietnamese War.

Joining the Communist Party

Nguyễn Tấn Dũng became a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam on 10 June 1967. He also attended the high-level Nguyen Ai Quoc Party School.

Political Career

Nguyễn Tấn Dũng became a key figure in Vietnamese politics. He was the youngest member of the Politburo in 1996. This is a very important group of leaders in the Communist Party.

  • He was the First Deputy Prime Minister from 1997 to 2006.
  • He also served as the governor of the State Bank of Vietnam from 1998 to 1999.
  • From 1995 to 1996, he was the Deputy Minister of Public Security.

Party Activities

Since 1981, Nguyễn Tấn Dũng was active in the Communist Party. He held many roles in Kiên Giang Province. These included being a member of the Provincial Party Committee and the Chairman of the People's Committees.

Prime Minister of Vietnam (2006-2016)

Nguyễn Tấn Dũng was the first Vietnamese Prime Minister born after the August Revolution in 1945. He was also the youngest, becoming Prime Minister at 57 years old.

First Term as Prime Minister

During his first term, he often talked with young people online. He gave advice on careers and discussed government control of media. When a young person asked how to become Prime Minister, he replied: "I always obeyed the assignments of the organization." This meant he followed the Party's directions.

Vietnam's younger generation was becoming more connected online. The government worked to grow the economy and improve technology skills.

Second Term as Prime Minister

On 26 July 2011, Nguyễn Tấn Dũng was re-elected as Prime Minister. He received many votes from the National Assembly.

In 2012, there were discussions about economic challenges. Some people were concerned about how the economy was managed. In October 2012, the Communist Party's Central Committee discussed these issues. They decided not to take disciplinary action against the Prime Minister. The Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption was later moved under the control of the Politburo.

On 14 November 2012, a member of the National Assembly, Dương Trung Quốc, asked Nguyễn Tấn Dũng to take responsibility for economic issues. This was a public statement made on TV.

Foreign Relations

As Prime Minister, Nguyễn Tấn Dũng traveled to many countries. He worked to build stronger relationships for Vietnam.

International Meetings

  • In 2009, he visited Russia and signed an arms deal.
  • In 2010, he met with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and President Obama. He spoke about Vietnam's economic growth. He also supported concerns about nuclear safety.
  • In April 2012, he met with Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Okada Katsuya. They talked about increasing cooperation between Vietnam and Japan. They also discussed making travel easier between the two countries.
  • He made a historic visit to the Vatican to meet with the Pope. This was the first time a Vietnamese leader had done so since 1975.

Family Life

Nguyễn Tấn Dũng is married to Trần Thanh Kiệm. They have three children:

  • Nguyễn Thanh Nghị (born 1976): He studied at George Washington University. Today, he is the Minister of Construction in Vietnam.
  • Nguyễn Thanh Phượng (born 1981): She started two companies, VietCapital Securities and VietCapital Asset Management. She is married to Nguyễn Bảo Hoàng. He leads IDG Ventures, a company that invests in technology and retail. He also owns the Vietnam Basketball Association and McDonald's restaurants in Vietnam.
  • Nguyễn Minh Triết (born 1988): He is an officer in the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union. He studied aeronautical engineering in London.
