Nome's History and Growth

Nome started as a stop on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad in the early 1860s. Back then, it was called Congreve Station.

How Nome Got Its Name

The city got its current name in 1903. This happened because many people moved there after oil was discovered. It was similar to the gold rush in Nome, Alaska, which is how the Texas city got its name.

Industries That Shaped Nome

Even after oil was found, rice farming remained very important. In 1936, another big discovery happened: natural gas and more oil. This created new jobs and industries for the area. Nome officially became an incorporated city in 1971. This means it became its own legal town with its own local government.
