Exploring North Palm Beach
A Look at North Palm Beach's Past
In 1954, a man named John D. MacArthur bought a large piece of land in northern Palm Beach County. This land was about 2,600 acres (10.5 square kilometers). It used to belong to Harry Seymour Kelsey and later to Sir Harry Oakes. This area now includes North Palm Beach, along with other towns like Lake Park, Palm Beach Gardens, and Palm Beach Shores.
MacArthur started to develop North Palm Beach. This area was once mostly mangrove swamps and farmland. There were only a few roads like Monet Road and Johnson Dairy Road, and US 1 and Prosperity Farms Road.
The village officially became a town in 1956. At the same time, a lot of building happened. Workers dug out canals to create waterfront areas. A new main road, Lighthouse Drive, was built to connect Old Dixie Highway and the updated US 1. US 1 was made wider and became the main road for offices and town buildings. Sir Harry Oakes' old castle-like house on US 1 became the clubhouse for the North Palm Beach Country Club. This club is on an island surrounded by the Intracoastal Waterway. You can reach it by three bridges.
From 1960 to 1961, Walter E. Thomas, Jr. was elected as the fourth Mayor of North Palm Beach. He and his family were one of the first families to move into the village in 1957.
Lake Park West Road was also extended and renamed Northlake Boulevard. This road became the main shopping area for the village.
The North Palm Beach Country Club is owned by the village and is open to everyone. It first opened in 1963. The original clubhouse was replaced in 2019 with a new one that looks like an Anglo-Caribbean style building.
