North Woodmere is an unincorporated hamlet located on Long Island. It sits inside the Town of Hempstead, New York in western Nassau County. This friendly neighborhood lies along the South Shore of the island. Many families live in this quiet, suburban area close to the water.

Discover the History of North Woodmere
Before modern houses were built in the 1950s, this land looked very different. It stretched from the village of Lawrence all the way to South Valley Stream. A well-known lawyer named Franklin B. Lord owned most of the expansive countryside. He also served as president of the local water company during the late nineteenth century.
The Early Woodland Estate
People often called his large property "The Lord's Woods." These tall trees extended through the village of Cedarhurst and Lawrence. They even reached toward Far Rockaway. Further inland near Mill Road, the thick forest cleared into open fields of farmland. A water pumping station operated on the land to help bring fresh water to nearby towns.
Suburban Growth and Changes
Around 1956, a huge housing boom took place all over Nassau County. Many builders wanted to create new neighborhoods for growing families. At that time, Woodmere Woods covered more than 100 acres of natural trees and green plants. It ran between Peninsula Boulevard and Mill Road. Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts loved to camp there beneath the stars.
Soon, a debate began between local residents, nature lovers, and building planners. Conservation groups wanted to save the trees and keep the wildlife safe. However, engineers learned how to dig deeper underground wells for clean drinking water. Because of this new technology, the water corporation decided to sell the open acreage. By 1958, developers cut down the woods to build houses. They gave the neighborhood the brand-new name of "North Woodmere Knolls."
Creating North Woodmere Park
Local citizens realized that children and families still needed outdoor places to exercise and play. In 1962, community voters made an important choice at the ballot box. They officially approved the county buying about 27 acres of grassy land. They also purchased roughly 45 acres of water. This decision allowed workers to build the wonderful North Woodmere County Park for everyone to share.
Connections to Nearby Neighborhoods
The new suburban homes needed an exciting name to attract new homeowners. The area connects closely to South Valley Stream and uses its main post office. However, builders wanted to highlight links to the nearby Five Towns community. The neighborhood joined the Hewlett-Woodmere School District for local students. Today, many people still view it as part of that wider neighborhood group.
Exploring Local Geography and Roadways
North Woodmere sits directly north of Woodmere. A stream of flowing water named Motts Creek separates the two places. People can easily travel between them using Branch Boulevard, Brookfield Road, or a footbridge. The footbridge lets walkers stroll directly across the creek.
The Five Towns Area
The nearby region called the Five Towns contains several small communities. These include the villages of Lawrence and Cedarhurst. It also features the hamlets of Hewlett, Inwood, and Woodmere. North Woodmere has close social links to these towns, but it remains its own hamlet.
Driving Around the Hamlet
Hungry Harbor Road serves as the primary route running east to west through town. It links directly to Branch Boulevard toward Cedarhurst. It also connects to Brookfield-Rosedale Road leading directly toward Valley Stream.
Drivers can turn onto Park Lane to reach Rosedale Road. That road leads cars quickly toward Francis Lewis Boulevard and Sunrise Highway. From there, travelers can connect to the Belt Parkway or the busy Cross Island Parkway. These big roadways make it simple to travel to New York City.

North Woodmere offers many fun activities for kids and adults. Families enjoy walking along peaceful neighborhood streets lined with shady green trees. Small businesses and neighborhood shops provide delicious food and supplies for every household.

The heart of outdoor fun is the huge county park. It features a bright swimming pool complex where kids can cool down during hot summers. Children love the fun playground with swings and slides. The grounds also offer a nine-hole golf course and a lighted driving range. People can even cast a line in the fishing area to catch fish.
Local Shops and Services
Families can buy groceries and goods at the local shopping center on Rosedale Road. Another former shopping center on Hungry Harbor Road was changed into an assisted living center. This building provides a safe home for elderly senior citizens.
