A Brief History of Norwich
The first settlers arrived in the Norwich area around 1788. The town of Norwich was officially created in 1793. It was formed from parts of two other towns: Union and Bainbridge.
Norwich was once a "mother town." This means it was a large area that later gave up land to form many new towns. For example, in 1806, parts of Norwich became the towns of Pharsalia, Plymouth, and Preston. More land was used in 1807 to help create New Berlin and Columbus.
In 1816, the small community (or hamlet) of Norwich became an official village. Later, it became the city of Norwich. Today, the city of Norwich is a separate area from the town of Norwich.
