The Nozomi trains are the fastest "bullet" trains in Japan. They are part of the famous Shinkansen network. These amazing trains can travel from Tokyo to Osaka in just 2 and a half hours. They are called "bullet" trains because they move incredibly fast, like a bullet shot from a gun. Nozomi trains can reach speeds of up to 300 km/h (about 186 miles per hour).

The Shinkansen system also has other fast trains. The Hikari train is the second fastest. The Kodama train is the third fastest. In the Japanese language, "Nozomi" means "hope". "Hikari" means "light", and "Kodama" means "Echo".

What is the Shinkansen?

"Shinkansen" means "New Trunk Line" in Japanese. This name was chosen because the system was built with all new parts. It has special bridges and tunnels that go through mountains and even under water. It also uses special tracks designed for high-speed trains. This allows the trains to go directly (straight) from one big city to another.

Before the Shinkansen, trains in Japan were much slower. They were older and had to go around many mountains. Sometimes, they even shared tracks with cars at road crossings. The Shinkansen changed all that, making travel much faster and safer.
