Nubble Peak is a cool mountain in Grafton County, New Hampshire. It's also sometimes called The Peak Above The Nubble. This mountain is part of the Twin Range, which is a group of mountains within the larger White Mountains.

There's a special rock area on its side called The Nubble. But on official maps, this same rock area is known as Haystack Mountain. Nubble Peak has another mountain, North Twin Mountain, right next to it on its south side.

Nubble Peak is quite tall, reaching about 3,813 feet (1,162 meters) high. It's considered one of the "New England Hundred Highest" summits. This means it's one of the 100 tallest mountains in the New England area! It doesn't have official hiking trails, so it's a bit wilder than some other mountains.

Where is Nubble Peak?

Nubble Peak is found in Grafton County, New Hampshire. It's part of the Twin Range of mountains. This range is a smaller group within the much larger and famous White Mountains. The White Mountains are known for their beautiful scenery and many hiking trails.

The Nubble Rock

On the side of Nubble Peak, there's a rocky spot called The Nubble. It's a noticeable rock outcrop on the mountain's northwestern side. Interestingly, on official maps that show the land, this same rock formation is actually named Haystack Mountain. So, it has two names for the same cool spot!

Neighboring Mountains

Nubble Peak isn't alone. To its south, you'll find North Twin Mountain. These mountains are like neighbors in the Twin Range.

Water Flowing from the Mountain

Mountains are important sources of water for rivers and streams. Nubble Peak is part of a "watershed" for the Ammonoosuc River. A watershed is like a giant bowl where all the rain and melting snow flow down into one main river.

Journey of the Water

  • Water from the east and southeast sides of Nubble Peak flows into the Little River.
  • The Little River then joins the larger Ammonoosuc River.
  • On the northwest side of Nubble Peak, water drains into Haystack Brook. This brook also flows into the Ammonoosuc River.
  • Finally, the southwest end of Nubble Peak sends its water to the North Branch of the Gale River. The Gale River is another stream that eventually joins the Ammonoosuc River.

All this water from Nubble Peak and its connected rivers eventually flows into the upper Connecticut River. The Connecticut River is a very long river that travels all the way down to Long Island Sound in Connecticut. So, a raindrop falling on Nubble Peak could end up in the ocean!
