Where is Nye Mountain?
Nye Mountain is found inside Adirondack Park in New York. This park is a huge protected area. The mountain is part of a larger group of peaks called the Adirondack High Peaks.
Water Flowing from the Mountain
Nye Mountain is part of a watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into one main river or lake. Water from Nye Mountain flows into the West Branch of the Ausable River. This river then flows into Lake Champlain. From there, the water travels into Canada, joining the Richelieu River and then the mighty Saint Lawrence River. Finally, it reaches the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean.
Water from the west side of Nye Mountain flows into the Chubb River. The north end of the mountain also drains into the Chubb River. Water from the east side goes into Indian Pass Brook, which then joins the Ausable River's West Branch.
The High Peaks List
The Adirondack High Peaks are a special group of mountains. To be on this list, a mountain usually needs to be at least 4,000 feet (about 1,219 meters) tall. It also needs to have a certain amount of "prominence." Prominence means how much a peak rises above the land around it.
In 1901, a survey by the USGS measured Nye Mountain. It seemed tall enough to be on the High Peaks list. However, later surveys in 1953 and 1999 found that Nye Mountain was not quite as tall as first thought. Its height was measured to be less than 4,000 feet.
Even though Nye Mountain and a few others don't quite meet the height rules anymore, the Adirondack Mountain Club decided to keep them on the traditional list. This means Nye Mountain is still considered one of the Adirondack High Peaks.
