Oleh Krysa (born June 1, 1942) is a famous American violinist with Ukrainian roots. He has won many international music competitions. He was also recognized as an Honored Artist in Ukraine for his musical talents.

Early Life and Musical Start

Oleh Krysa was born in Uchanie, which is now part of Poland. His family moved to Lviv, Ukraine, in 1945, where he grew up.

Even though his family members were not professional musicians, Oleh's mother wanted him to play the violin. His father preferred the piano. So, Oleh started learning the violin when he was six years old. His first teacher was Konstantin Mikhailov.

After finishing music school in Lviv in 1960, Oleh Krysa went to the Moscow Conservatory. He studied there with the famous violinist David Oistrakh from 1960 to 1967. Oistrakh said that Oleh had "brilliant natural gifts" and "unusual musicality."

Oleh Krysa's Career

Performing as a Soloist

After graduating from the Moscow Conservatory, Oleh Krysa became a soloist at the Kiev Philharmonic. He also taught at the Kiev Conservatory.

Later, he moved back to Moscow to become David Oistrakh's assistant. He also joined the well-known Beethoven Quartet as the first violinist. He played with this group until 1987. Since the 1960s, Oleh Krysa has performed as a soloist all over the world. He plays with many leading orchestras and chamber groups.

Oleh Krysa is also known for playing new music. He has performed the first shows of pieces by composers like Alfred Schnittke, Valentin Silvestrov, and Myroslav Skoryk.

Teaching Music

Oleh Krysa has also had a very important career as a teacher. He has helped many young musicians learn to play the violin.

  • 1969—1973 — He was the first head of the Violin Department at the Kiev Conservatory.
  • Since 1971 — He became a professor at the Kiev Conservatory.
  • Since 1973 — He taught as a professor at the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow.
  • 1974 — He became a professor at the Moscow Conservatory.
  • Since 1989 — He has been a professor at the Eastman School of Music in the United States.

Family Life

Oleh Krysa was married to Tatiana Tchekina, who was a pianist. She passed away in 2013.

He has three children who are also musicians:

  • Taras Krysa — a violinist and conductor
  • Andrej Madatov — a violinist

His siblings also have musical connections. His brother, Bogdan Krysa, is a violinist and teacher at the Kyiv Academy of Music.
