About Orry-Kelly's Life

Early Years in Australia

Orry-Kelly was born on December 31, 1897, in a town called Kiama, in New South Wales, Australia. His family and friends knew him as Jack Kelly. His father, William Kelly, was a tailor.

When Orry-Kelly was 17, he moved to Sydney. He was supposed to study banking there. However, he became very interested in theater and plays instead.

Moving to the United States

Orry-Kelly decided to move to New York City to try acting. He shared an apartment in Greenwich Village with a few friends, including the famous actor Cary Grant.

He got a job painting murals in a nightclub. This led him to work for Fox East Coast studios. There, he helped create the words shown on screen in silent films. He also designed costumes and sets for big Broadway shows like the Shubert Revues. During World War II, he served in the United States Army Air Corps for a while.

After leaving Warner Bros., he designed costumes for other major studios. These included Universal, RKO, 20th Century Fox, and MGM. He won three Academy Awards for Best Costume Design. These were for the movies An American in Paris, Les Girls, and Some Like It Hot. He was also nominated for a fourth Oscar for Gypsy.
