The Oskondaga River is a river located in the Thunder Bay District in Ontario, Canada. It's part of the huge Great Lakes Basin, which means its waters eventually flow into the Great Lakes. This river is a smaller stream that flows into the Shebandowan River.
The Oskondaga River valley runs alongside Ontario Highway 17. This highway is also part of the Trans-Canada Highway, a very long road that crosses Canada. You can also find railway lines near the river. The Canadian Pacific Railway has a main line that is still used today. There's also an old Canadian National Railway line that is no longer in use.
River's Journey
The Oskondaga River starts its journey at an unnamed lake. This lake is in an area called Golding Township. It's just north of a small community named Raith. This starting point is special because it's on a "watershed divide." This means that water on one side of this line flows to the Atlantic Ocean, and water on the other side flows to the Arctic Ocean.
From its source, the river first flows southeast, then turns south. It then enters another area called Goldie Township. Here, it is joined by a smaller river called the East Oskondaga River. This smaller river flows into the Oskondaga River from its left side.
The Oskondaga River continues flowing south. It enters Dawson Road Lots Township. It then flows under Ontario Highway 17 and Ontario Highway 11 near the community of Shabaqua Corners. Finally, the Oskondaga River reaches its end, flowing into the Shebandowan River.
Where the Water Goes
Once the Oskondaga River joins the Shebandowan River, its water continues on a longer journey. The Shebandowan River flows into the Matawin River. The Matawin River then flows into the Kaministiquia River. Finally, the Kaministiquia River empties into Lake Superior. Lake Superior is one of the five Great Lakes.
Smaller Rivers Joining In
The Oskondaga River has one main smaller river that flows into it. These smaller rivers are called tributaries.
