How Hurricane Andrew Shaped the Village
In August 1992, a very strong storm called Hurricane Andrew hit Palmetto Bay. It caused a lot of damage to homes and businesses. Many buildings were destroyed.
After the hurricane, the community worked hard to rebuild. Palmetto Bay was one of the areas most affected by the storm in Miami. It still reminds people of how powerful that hurricane was.
Becoming an Official Village
Palmetto Bay became an official village on September 10, 2002. Before this, it was made up of smaller areas like Cutler, Rockdale, and East Perrine.
The first leaders of the village were Mayor Eugene Flinn, Jr., Vice Mayor Linda Robinson, and council members John Breder, Edward Feller, and Paul Neidhart. They helped set up the new government.
Where is Palmetto Bay? Geography and Location
Palmetto Bay is located just west of Biscayne Bay. It is about 15 miles southwest of downtown Miami. A major road called U.S. Route 1 (Dixie Highway) forms the western edge of the village.
Neighboring Communities
Palmetto Bay shares its borders with several other towns. To the northeast, it is next to Coral Gables. To the north, you'll find Pinecrest. Kendall is to the northwest.
To the west is Palmetto Estates. West Perrine is to the southwest. Finally, Cutler Bay is located to the south.

The village of Palmetto Bay covers a total area of about 8.44 square miles. Most of this area, about 8.28 square miles, is land. The remaining 0.16 square miles, which is about 1.86% of the total, is covered by water.

At one time, the main office for Burger King was located in what is now Palmetto Bay. This large office campus was once hidden away in the area known as Cutler.
Burger King moved its headquarters in 2002. Today, the old Burger King campus is used for rental offices by different companies.
