Paloma Faith Blomfield was born in Hackney, London, on 21 July 1981. Her mother was English and her father was Spanish. Her parents separated when she was two years old. She grew up with her mother in Stoke Newington.

As a child, she took ballet classes. After finishing her A-levels, she studied contemporary dance at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds. During this time, she also worked as a hip-hop dancer. Later, she earned a master's degree in theatre directing from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. She also had many part-time jobs, including working in a shop, singing in a burlesque show, and even being a magician's assistant.

Paloma Faith began her music career by imitating famous soul and jazz singers like Etta James and Billie Holiday. She met her managers in 2007. They were very impressed by her unique artistic style.

While working in a pub, the manager asked her to sing in his band, called Paloma and the Penetrators. An A&R (Artists and Repertoire) person from Epic Records saw her perform and invited her to audition. She was offered a contract after a memorable audition.
