Papua New Guinea (often called PNG) first joined the Olympic Games in 1976. Since then, they have sent athletes to almost every Summer Olympic Games. The only time they did not participate was in 1980. This was because they joined a boycott led by the United States.
PNG has never won an Olympic medal. They have also never competed in the Winter Olympic Games.
The country's most successful athlete so far is swimmer Ryan Pini. He reached the final of the men's 100 metre butterfly event. This happened at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
The National Olympic Committee for Papua New Guinea was created in 1973. The International Olympic Committee officially recognized it in 1974.
