Paul Ramadier's Life
Early Life and Career
Paul Ramadier was the son of a psychiatrist, a doctor who helps people with their mental health. He studied law at the University of Toulouse and became a lawyer in Paris. In 1911, he earned a special degree in Roman law, which is about ancient Roman legal systems.
He became the mayor of a town called Decazeville in 1919. This was his first big step into politics.
During World War II
During World War II, France was taken over by Germany. A new French government, called the Vichy regime, was set up. On July 10, 1940, Paul Ramadier bravely voted against giving too much power to Marshal Philippe Pétain, who led the Vichy government.
Ramadier also joined the French Resistance, a secret group that fought against the German occupation. He used a secret name, or nom de guerre, which was Violette. After the war, his name was added to the Yad Vashem Jewish memorial. This memorial honors people who helped Jewish people during the war.
After the War
After France was freed, Paul Ramadier worked in the government of Charles de Gaulle from 1944 to 1945. He was the Minister for Provisions, meaning he was in charge of making sure people had enough food and supplies. He was known as a hard worker who was practical and tried to bring people together.
In 1947, Paul Ramadier became the first Prime Minister of the Fourth Republic of France. During his time as Prime Minister, the French Communist Party left the government. This ended a special partnership of three main political groups, known as "tripartisme". Ramadier also supported the Marshall Plan, which was a big plan to help European countries rebuild after the war.
Later, from 1956 to 1957, Ramadier served as the Minister of Finance, managing the country's money, under another leader named Guy Mollet.
