Early Life
Paula DeAnda was born in San Angelo, Texas. Her parents, Steven and Barbara, are Mexican-American. Her dad managed a restaurant, and her mom was a nurse.
When Paula was six, she started taking piano lessons. Her piano teacher soon suggested she sing at local events. She also sang the national anthem at football games. In 2002, her family moved to Corpus Christi. They hoped this move would help her music career, as Corpus Christi was known for its music scene. Paula went to Mary Carroll High School.
Music Career
Starting Out: Her First Album
Paula DeAnda got a big chance to open for hip-hop artists like Nelly, Baby Bash, and Frankie J. She performed for twenty thousand people!
Her first song, "What Would It Take," was sent to local radio stations in July 2006. It was played on many stations across the country. Her next song, "Doing Too Much," came out in December. This led to an audition with Clive Davis, a famous music executive. He signed her to Arista Records right away.
"Doing Too Much" was the first song from her debut album, Paula DeAnda. The album was released in the summer of 2006. It reached the Top 50 on the Hot 100 chart. In 2007, the album was certified gold in the US. This means it sold over 500,000 copies! The album also reached No. 54 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The album mostly features pop and R&B songs about love and relationships. Paula helped write four of the songs on the album. She was only 16 years old when her first album came out.
Her second song, "Walk Away (Remember Me)," was her biggest hit. It reached the top twenty on the Hot 100 chart. This song was written by Christina Milian and Ne-Yo. "Walk Away (Remember Me)" also became a gold-certified single. Other songs from her first album included "When It Was Me" and "Easy." The song "Easy" featured rapper Bow Wow. Paula also appeared in the MTV movie Super Sweet 16: The Movie.
In 2008, Paula started working on her next album. A song called "Stunned Out" was released and played on the radio. However, the main song for the album became "Roll the Credits." Around this time, Clive Davis left Arista Records. Paula also decided to leave Arista and become an independent artist. This meant she would release music on her own.
New Music and The Voice
After leaving Arista Records, Paula's second album was not released. A Spanish album she worked on also didn't come out officially, but some songs were leaked online.
In 2010, Paula started sharing cover songs on YouTube. She then released several digital songs. These included "Besos" in 2011, "Your Place" in 2012, and "Shut Up and Love Me" in 2013.
In 2014, Paula auditioned for NBC's singing competition, The Voice. Both Shakira and Blake Shelton wanted her on their team, and she chose Blake Shelton. During the "Battles" round, she sang "Do What U Want" with Sisaundra Lewis. Paula was eliminated from the show after this performance.
After The Voice, Paula worked with the Jump Smokers on her first EP (Extended Play) called The Voice & The Beats. This EP was released on June 25, 2014. It included the song "Horns Blow (Shimmy Shimmy)."
Recent Projects
In February 2015, Paula started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a new album. She reached her goal in just a few weeks! In May, she announced an EP called PDA. A song from this project, "Brand New," was released on March 23, 2015.
In 2018, Paula was asked to sing the Star Spangled Banner again for a big boxing match. In April 2019, she was featured on a song called "Killin' My Vibe." This song included her singing in Hindi and became popular in Southeast Asia.
On October 3, 2019, Paula released "Iddi Biddi." This song was a tribute to famous singers Selena and Aaliyah. Since December 2019, Paula has hinted that she might work with singer Nivea. Both singers have shown interest in making music together.
