Early Life and Music Start
Paula DeAnda was born in San Angelo, Texas, on November 3, 1989. Her parents, Steven and Barbara, are Mexican-American. Her dad managed a restaurant, and her mom was a nurse.
When Paula was six, she started piano lessons. Her teacher noticed she had a great singing voice. Soon, Paula was singing at events all over town. She even sang the national anthem at local football games.
In 2002, Paula's family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. They hoped this move would help her music career. Corpus Christi was known as a good place for musicians. Paula went to Mary Carroll High School there.
Music Career
Starting Out and First Album
Paula got a big chance to open for famous hip-hop artists. She performed for twenty thousand people at a concert. Her first song, "What Would It Take," was played on local radio stations.
Later, she released "Doing Too Much" in December. This led to an audition with Clive Davis, a very important person in the music industry. He signed her to Arista Records right away.
"Doing Too Much" was the first song from her album, Paula DeAnda. The album came out in the summer of 2006. It reached number 54 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was certified gold in the US in 2007. This means it sold over 500,000 copies.
Paula was only 16 when her first album was released. She helped write four songs on the album. Her biggest hit was "Walk Away (Remember Me)." This song was written by Christina Milian and Ne-Yo. It reached the top twenty on the Hot 100 chart. "Walk Away (Remember Me)" also went gold. Other songs from her first album included "When It Was Me" and "Easy." The song "Easy" featured rapper Bow Wow. Paula also appeared in the MTV movie Super Sweet 16: The Movie.
In 2008, Paula started working on her next album. A song called "Stunned Out" was released. However, Clive Davis left Arista's parent company. After he left, Paula also decided to leave Arista. She became an independent artist, meaning she managed her own music.
New Music and "The Voice"
After leaving Arista Records, Paula's second album was not released. She also had plans for a Spanish album, but it was leaked online. In 2010, Paula started sharing cover songs on YouTube.
She then released several digital songs. These included "Besos" in 2011, "Your Place" in 2012, and "Shut Up and Love Me" in 2013. In 2013, Paula sang the National Anthem live on TV. This was for a big boxing match.
In 2014, Paula auditioned for The Voice. This is a popular singing competition on NBC. Both Shakira and Blake Shelton wanted her on their team. Paula chose to join Team Blake. She was later eliminated during the Battles round.
