Peter Blair Henry was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1969. He became a citizen of the United States in 1986.

He was a very bright student. He earned a special scholarship called a Rhodes Scholarship. This allowed him to study mathematics at St Catherine's College, Oxford in England. He also played basketball there.

Before Oxford, he studied economics at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated with high honors in 1991. Later, Peter Henry earned his PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1997. While studying, he advised the leaders of the Bank of Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. His work helped set up the first stock exchange in the Eastern Caribbean area.

Peter Blair Henry became the Dean Emeritus of New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business. This means he was the head of the business school. He was the youngest person ever to hold this important job. He started in January 2010.
