The Pimple Hills are a group of mountains in New Jersey, United States. They are part of the larger Appalachian Mountains chain. The highest point of the Pimple Hills is about 1,122 feet (342 m) tall. You can find them in Sussex County.
Where are the Pimple Hills?
The Pimple Hills are located between two valleys. To the southeast, there's the Sparta Valley, where the Wallkill River flows. To the northwest, you'll find Germany Flats, which is part of the Kittatinny Valley.
How the Pimple Hills Were Formed
The Pimple Hills are part of a larger area called the Reading Prong. This area is a section of the Appalachian Mountains. The mountains in the Pimple Hills are made of very old, hard rocks. These rocks are called crystalline metamorphic rocks. They have changed over millions of years due to heat and pressure.
The Reading Prong, including the Pimple Hills, is part of a bigger group of mountains. This group is known as the Crystalline Appalachians. These mountains stretch from Vermont in the north all the way to the Blue Ridge Mountains in the south.
It's important to know that the Crystalline Appalachians are different from other nearby mountains. For example, the Kittatinny Mountains are made of sedimentary rocks. These rocks formed from layers of sand and mud over time.
A Look Back in Time
People have known about the Pimple Hills for a long time. In 1834, a description mentioned them. It said:
Pimple Hill, a noted eminence of Hardiston t-ship, Sussex co., near the eastern line of the t-ship.
This means that even back then, Pimple Hill was a well-known high point in Hardyston Township.
