Location

Port Noarlunga South is a suburb in South Australia. It is part of the larger Adelaide metropolitan area. This suburb is located right on the coast of Gulf St Vincent. It sits about 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of Adelaide's city center.

History of Port Noarlunga South

Port Noarlunga South started as a private land development in 1923. Parts of it were first called Paringa and Port Onkaparinga.

Changes to the Suburb's Borders

Over time, the suburb's boundaries changed. In 1960, some land from an area called Onkaparinga was added. Later, in 1995, a piece of land was removed. This land was used to create a new suburb called Seaford Meadows.

Naming South Port Beach

In 2001, the South Port Surf Life Saving Club suggested a name change. They wanted to rename parts of Port Noarlunga and Port Noarlunga South as South Port. However, this idea was later dropped. Local officials from the City of Onkaparinga discussed the issue. Instead, they decided to look into officially naming the beach as South Port Beach.

Onkaparinga Community Playground

At the northern end of Port Noarlunga South, there is a large playground. It is located between Saltfeet Street to the west and the Onkaparinga River to the east.

A Unique Community Project

This playground is special because the community helped build it. It is unique in South Australia for this reason. People raised A$250,000 from community sponsors. Then, volunteers built the playground between June 18 and 23, 2002.

How the Playground Project Started

The idea for this project came from research done in Christies Beach. A public meeting was held, and then a non-profit group was formed. This group worked to make the playground happen.

Names for the Playground

As of 2013, the City of Onkaparinga had not chosen an official name. So, it is known by a few different names:

  • The South Australian government calls it Jubilee Park or A E Young Reserve.
  • The local community often calls it the Adventure Playground.
