The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is a modern art museum in Downtown Miami, Florida. It's officially called the Jorge M. Pérez Art Museum of Miami-Dade County. The museum moved to its amazing new building in 2013. This building is located in Maurice A. Ferré Park, right by the water.

PAMM started in 1984 as the Center for the Fine Arts. Later, it was known as the Miami Art Museum. In 2013, it got its current name when the new building opened. This new building was designed by famous architects Herzog & de Meuron. PAMM is part of a bigger area called Maurice A. Ferré Park. This park also has the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science.

The museum has a large collection of art. It features art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Most of the art comes from the Americas, Western Europe, and Africa. In 2016, the museum had almost 2,000 artworks. Since moving to its new home, PAMM has become very popular. Over 150,000 people visited in its first four months! You can easily get to PAMM by taking the Metromover to the Museum Park station.

Museum History

Early Beginnings

In 1972, people in Miami-Dade County voted for a plan to fund arts projects. This plan helped create a new art center. The Center for the Fine Arts opened in 1983. It was part of the Miami-Dade Cultural Center in downtown Miami. This center was designed by architect Philip Johnson. The museum was located at 101 West Flagler Street. It shared the Miami Cultural Plaza with HistoryMiami and the Miami-Dade Public Library.

When it first opened, the Center for the Fine Arts mostly showed traveling art exhibits. It didn't start collecting its own art until 1996. At that time, it became the Miami Art Museum. The museum had limited space for storing and showing art.

A New Home and Name

In 2010, work began on a brand new building for the museum. This new building is in Maurice A. Ferré Park in Downtown Miami. Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron designed it. They were chosen in 2009. The building's design looks like Stiltsville. Stiltsville is a group of wooden houses built on stilts in Biscayne Bay.

The new museum building is very large. It has 200,000 square feet of space. About 120,000 square feet are inside for exhibits. The other 80,000 square feet are outside. The display rooms inside have big windows. These windows let in natural light. A huge staircase connects the museum to the waterfront.

The building is designed to handle hurricanes and floods. It also has large, shaded terraces. These terraces help keep the building cool. The museum also features special hanging gardens. These gardens are made of local plants. French botanist Patrick Blanc designed them. He used 80 kinds of plants that can survive Miami's hot weather and hurricanes. These plants help visitors feel connected to nature as they enter. The new PAMM building opened in December 2013.

To build this amazing new museum, the museum worked with the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County. The City of Miami provided the land by Biscayne Bay. The total cost was $220 million. Miami-Dade voters provided $100 million. Private donors gave another $120 million. Jorge M. Pérez, a museum supporter, gave a huge gift of $35 million. Because of his generous donation, the museum was renamed the Jorge M. Pérez Art Museum of Miami-Dade County. The new museum aims to make Museum Park a major cultural spot in Miami. It also helps with art education and community building.

Building Design

The design of the new building by Herzog & de Meuron has received many compliments. The Wall Street Journal said the design could make the museum a popular place to visit. The New York Times called the design "spectacular." The Washington Post even said the new setting is as important as the art collection itself.

The Pérez Art Museum Miami won an award in 2015. It was chosen for the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Professional Awards.

Art Collection

The museum shows many types of art. These include paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, installation art, video, and photography.

PAMM has been collecting art since 1996. It focuses on 20th-century and modern art. It also collects art from the Atlantic Rim. This includes art from the Americas, Western Europe, and Africa. When the new building opened, the museum had 1,800 artworks. Almost 500 of these were added in 2013. These included pieces by famous artists like John Baldessari and Olafur Eliasson. The museum's permanent collection has works by artists such as Purvis Young, Joseph Cornell, Kehinde Wiley, and Frank Stella.

Many artworks in the museum's collection have been donated. Jorge M. Pérez gave 110 works. These included pieces by Cuban painters like José Bedia Valdés and Wifredo Lam. He also donated art by Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Damian Ortega.

In 2012, Pérez also gave $500,000 to start a fund for buying African-American art. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation matched this gift. This fund helped the museum buy art from artists like Terry Adkins, Romare Bearden, and Faith Ringgold. In 2014, the museum started a program called "Ambassador of African American Art." This program lets donors help grow the collection of African-American art.

In 2013, museum trustee Craig Robins donated 102 artworks from his own collection. These included paintings, photographs, and sculptures.

In 2016, Jorge M. Pérez made another big donation. He gave more than 200 artworks from his personal collection. These were valued at $5 million. They included contemporary Cuban art by artists like Glexis Novoa and Hernan Bas. He also pledged an additional $10 million. The first $5 million of this was used to buy more contemporary Cuban art. The other $5 million went to the museum's general fund. Thanks to his gifts, PAMM now has one of the largest collections of modern Cuban art in America.

By 2017, Pérez had donated over 170 artworks in total. In 2019, Maria Bechily and Scott Hodes donated sixteen works by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. These artworks were worth about $3 million. Also in 2019, the museum received a painting called New Hat by Kenny Rivero. This was a gift from the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA).

The museum also featured a special section at Frieze New York in 2019. This section showed artists from Just Above Midtown (JAM). JAM was an important Black Power Art Gallery in the 1970s and 80s.

Visitors

After the new building opened, PAMM saw a huge increase in visitors. Over 150,000 people visited in the first four months. In its first year, 300,000 people came to the museum. Before the new building, the old Miami Art Museum had about 54,000 visitors in 2012. This was a low number for a big city like Miami. Aaron Podhurst is the chairman of the museum's board. Gregory C. Ferrero has been the president since 2017.

Funding

When it was the Miami Art Museum, its yearly budget was about $6 million. After the new building opened and the museum changed its name, the budget grew to $16 million per year. This allowed the museum to hire more staff and curators. In 2013–14, Miami-Dade County provided $2.5 million of this budget.

In 2019, PAMM received a $1 million gift from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This money supports the museum's new Caribbean Cultural Institute. This institute helps research and show art by artists from the Caribbean and its diaspora.

Community Programs

Inside/Out

In 2017, PAMM took part in a program called Inside/Out. This program is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. For three months, PAMM displayed copies of its artworks in different neighborhoods across Miami-Dade. This project helps bring art to the community.

PAMM Student Pass

In March 2018, PAMM started the PAMM Student Pass. This program works with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. It gives free entry to the museum for all Pre-K to 12th-grade students in the county.

PAMM Library Pass

PAMM also offers a Library Pass. This program works with the Miami-Dade County Public Library. You can get free museum passes from any Miami-Dade Public Library branch.
