Rechthalten is a small town, called a municipality, located in the Sense district of Fribourg, Switzerland. It used to be known by a French name, Dirlaret, but that name isn't used anymore. Even though the Fribourg area mostly speaks French, most people in Rechthalten speak German.

History of Rechthalten
Rechthalten is quite old! It was first written about in 1142. Back then, it had different names like Drallaris and Dreitlaris. By the year 1250, it was known as Rehthalton.
Geography and Landscape
Rechthalten covers an area of about 7.3 square kilometers (2.8 square miles). A large part of this land, about 73.7%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 18.2% of the area.
About 7.1% of the land has buildings or roads on it. A small amount, 0.5%, is made up of rivers or lakes. The rest of the land is not used for farming or building.
The town is in the Sense district, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) south-east of the city of Fribourg. Rechthalten is a haufendorf village. This means it's an irregular, unplanned village with buildings packed closely together around a central area. You'll also find scattered small hamlets and farmhouses around the main village.
Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for Rechthalten is described as Sable on a Pale Argent three Fleurs-de-lys Azure. This means it has a black background (Sable). In the middle, there's a wide silver stripe (Pale Argent). On this stripe, there are three blue Fleur-de-lis symbols.
Population and People
Rechthalten has a population of about 1,082 people (as of 2023). In 2008, only a small part of the population, about 2.1%, were people from other countries. Over the last 10 years (from 2000 to 2010), the population grew by 7.1%.
Most people in Rechthalten speak German. In 2000, about 95.4% of the population spoke German as their main language. French was the second most common language, spoken by 3.8% of the people. A very small number of people spoke Portuguese or Italian.
In 2008, the population was almost evenly split between males (48.9%) and females (51.1%). Most residents were Swiss citizens.
Looking at age groups in 2000:
- Children and teenagers (0–19 years old) made up 22.7% of the population.
- Adults (20–64 years old) made up 63.7%.
- Seniors (over 64 years old) made up 13.6%.
In 2000, there were 394 homes in Rechthalten, with about 2.6 people living in each home on average.

Economy and Jobs
In 2010, the unemployment rate in Rechthalten was very low, at 1.2%. This means most people who wanted to work had a job.
In 2008, there were 140 full-time jobs in the municipality. These jobs were spread across different types of work:
- Primary Sector: This includes jobs like farming. There were 49 jobs in agriculture.
- Secondary Sector: This includes jobs in manufacturing (making things) and construction (building things). There were 33 jobs in this sector.

Religion
Based on the 2000 census, most people in Rechthalten are Christian. About 80.3% were Roman Catholic, and 13.4% belonged to the Swiss Reformed Church. A small number of people belonged to other Christian churches or other religions like Islam. About 2.83% of the population did not belong to any church.
Education
In Rechthalten, many adults have completed a good level of education. About 36.3% of the population finished upper secondary education, which is like high school. Also, 9.5% went on to higher education at a university or a specialized college.
The Fribourg school system works like this:
- One year of optional Kindergarten.
- Six years of Primary school.
- Three years of required lower Secondary school, where students are grouped by their abilities.
- After that, students can choose to go to a three or four-year optional upper Secondary school. This can be a gymnasium (which prepares you for university) or a vocational program (which teaches job skills).
- Finally, students can go to a Tertiary school or start an apprenticeship.
During the 2010–11 school year, 111 students attended classes in Rechthalten. The town had 2 kindergarten classes and 4 primary classes. Students in lower secondary, upper secondary, or higher education usually attended schools in nearby towns.
