Redbank is a suburb located in the City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. In 2021, Redbank was home to 2,931 people. It's a place with a rich history and important industries.

What is Redbank's Location?

Redbank is surrounded by natural features. Six Mile Creek forms its western border. The Brisbane River flows along its north-west, north, and north-east sides. Goodna Creek is to the east, and another part of Goodna Creek is to the south-west.

How to Get Around Redbank?

The Ipswich Motorway passes through Redbank, connecting it to Goodna in the east and Riverview in the west.

The main railway line runs next to the motorway. Redbank has two train stations:

  • Redbank railway station, which offers services for passengers.
  • Redbank Workshops railway station, which serves the Redbank Railway Workshops.

What is the Land Used For?

North of the railway line, the land is used for factories, shops, and farms. The Redbank Railway Workshops are a very important industry here. Between the railway line and the motorway, you'll find mostly homes. South of the motorway, there's a large area of undeveloped bushland, with more homes further south.

A Look Back: Redbank's History

The name "Redbank" came from Major Edmund Lockyer. He described the area's red banks while exploring the Brisbane River in a boat.

Redbank is known for its farming past, but it has a much more diverse history.

Early Settlers and Farming

In the late 1850s, the first farmers settled near the river. This early settlement had a brickworks, a sawmill, shops, homes, a school, and a church. However, due to big floods, it later moved south of the railway station.

The rich soil was perfect for growing crops like maize (corn), potatoes, and animal feed. Cotton became a major crop in the 1860s and 1870s. By the early 1900s, dairy farming became very important, with several creameries (places that process milk) opening.

First Industries

The first major industry in Redbank started in the late 1850s. Mr. John Campbell and Mr. Town opened a "boiling down works" and a "fellmongery." These places processed animal products.

Redbank Schools

Redbank's first school opened in July 1865. It was started by the Roman Catholic Church and also served as a church. In 1881, it became Redbank State School. It closed for a short time in 1895 but reopened in 1897. The school expanded in 1951.

Redbank's Railway History

The Redbank - Bundamba Loop Line was a series of railway tracks that served the local coal mines.

The Redbank Rifle Range

The Redbank Rifle Range was active from 1912 to 1980. It was a place where many rifle clubs practiced competitive target shooting. During World War II, it was a large military camp and training area. Up to 6,000 Australian and American soldiers trained there. When the Ipswich Motorway was built, it shortened the range, causing the rifle club to move in 1972.

Redbank Railway Workshops

The Redbank Railway Workshops have been an important part of the suburb since 1958. They are a major industrial site.

Redbank Plaza Library

The Redbank Plaza Library first opened in 1998. It was updated in 2010 to better serve the community.
