A Look at Redbank Plains' History

The name "Redbank Plains" doesn't have a recorded story. However, the nearby suburb of Redbank got its name in 1825. Major Edmund Lockyer named it because of the red soil he saw on the bank of the Brisbane River.

Early Schools in Redbank Plains

Education has been important in Redbank Plains for a long time.

• A school, whose original name is not known, was started by the Roman Catholic Church in 1868.
• On 17 January 1870, it became the Redbank Plains Non Vested School.
• A new school building was built in 1873. It officially opened as Redbank Plains State School on 9 February 1874.

The Old Church Building

A Primitive Methodist church opened in Redbank Plains on 26 December 1875. This church, later known as the Redbank Plains Uniting Church, was still standing in 2010. In 2011, the church building was damaged by fire. The property was sold in 2013, and by 2015, no building remained on the site.

Modern Schools and Library

• The Redbank Plains Library first opened its doors in 1985. It had a big update in 2010 to make it even better.
• Redbank Plains State High School welcomed its first students on 27 January 1987.
• Staines Memorial College opened in 2005 in Springfield. It is named in memory of Graham Staines, a missionary. In 2010, the college moved to Redbank Plains.
• Fernbrooke State School opened on 1 January 2017.
• St Ann's Catholic Primary School started in 2020 with 98 students from Prep to Year 3.

Weather Radar Station

At the end of Vic Cumner Drive, there's a special weather radar called CP2.
