Renault as a Factory Team
Renault first joined Formula One as its own team in 1977. They were pioneers, meaning they were one of the first teams to use turbocharged engines. These engines were very powerful for their time!
Early Years: 1977-1985
In their early days, Renault's cars were known for being very fast, especially in qualifying (when drivers try to get the best starting position). Their first win came in 1979 with French driver Jean-Pierre Jabouille. This was a huge moment for the team!
Other famous drivers like René Arnoux and Alain Prost also raced for Renault during this period. They won several races and often started from the front of the grid (called "pole position"). In 1983, Alain Prost came very close to winning the World Championship, finishing second overall. The team also finished second in the Constructors' Championship that year, showing how strong they were.
After the 1985 season, Renault decided to take a break from racing as a full factory team.
Return to F1: 2002-2011
Renault returned to Formula One as a factory team in 2002. They had bought the Benetton team and changed its name. This new era brought even greater success!
Winning Championships: 2005-2006
The years 2005 and 2006 were amazing for Renault. With the talented Spanish driver Fernando Alonso and Italian driver Giancarlo Fisichella, Renault won both the Drivers' Championship (with Alonso) and the Constructors' Championship (for the team) in both years! This was a huge achievement, proving they had built incredibly fast and reliable cars.
Fernando Alonso became a double world champion with Renault, winning many races and showing incredible skill. Giancarlo Fisichella also contributed with wins and podium finishes.
Later Years: 2007-2011
After their championship wins, Renault continued to compete, but faced tougher competition. Drivers like Heikki Kovalainen, Nelson Piquet Jr., Robert Kubica, and Vitaly Petrov raced for the team. They still managed to get some podium finishes and even a few wins, like Fernando Alonso's two victories in 2008.
In 2011, Renault finished 5th in the Constructors' Championship before taking another break as a factory team.

Other Engines Based on Renault
Sometimes, Renault's engines were rebranded or managed by other companies. For example, Mecachrome helped build and manage Renault's engines for other teams.
