History of Rockland
The area where Rockland is located was once part of a large land grant called the Hardenburgh Patent. People first started settling in this town around 1789.
Rockland was officially created in 1910. It was formed from the western part of another town called Neversink.
Geography of Rockland
The northwestern side of Rockland borders Delaware County. The northeastern side borders Ulster County. Most of the town is inside the beautiful Catskill Park, a special area known for its natural beauty.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town covers a total area of about 95.2 square miles (246.7 square kilometers). Of this, about 94.3 square miles (243.8 square kilometers) is land, and 1.0 square mile (2.8 square kilometers) is water.

Rockland is home to several smaller communities and places:
- Anderson: A small community near the eastern border of the town.
- Beaverkill: A community near the northwestern border. The Beaverkill Bridge here was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
- Craigle Clair: A community in the western part of the town.
- De Bruce: A community about five miles east of Livingston Manor. Its name comes from an old land owner, Elias Desbrosses.
- Deckertown: A community located north of Livingston Manor.
- Grooville: This community was once called "Emmonsville." It is in the southeastern part of the town.
- Hazel: A community in the southern part of the town, close to Route 17.
- Joscelyn: A community in the western part of the town.
- Livingston Manor: A community in the southern part of the town, named after Dr. Edward Livingston.
- Lew Beach: A community at the very northern tip of the town.
- Morsston: A community near the southern border of the town.
- Parkston: A community located east of Livingston Manor.
- Rockland: This community is in the western part of the town, north of Roscoe village. The Rockland Mill Complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
- Roscoe: A community in the southwestern part of the town. It used to be known as Westfield Flats.
