This mountain is located about 2 miles (3.5 km) east of a spot called Irish Gap. Other mountains and ridges like Elk Pond Mountain and Grapevine Ridge are nearby.

Water Flowing from Rocky Mountain

The water that falls on Rocky Mountain eventually makes its way to the James River. This river is very important in Virginia. From the James River, the water then flows into the large Chesapeake Bay.

How Water Reaches the James River

  • Water from the northwest side of Rocky Mountain flows into Nettle Springs Branch, then Irish Creek, and finally the South River. This water then joins the Maury River before reaching the James River.
  • On the southwest side, water goes into Statons Creek. From there, it flows into the Pedlar River and then into the James River.
  • Water from the east side of the mountain drains into Greasy Spring Branch, which leads to the South Fork of the Piney River. This water then joins the Tye River before reaching the James River.

Exploring Rocky Mountain's Surroundings

Rocky Mountain is located inside the George Washington National Forest. This is a large forest area where people can enjoy nature. The top of the mountain has some radio towers, which are used for communication. A dirt road leads up to these towers.

Two very famous trails pass close to Rocky Mountain:

  • The Appalachian Trail: This is a super long hiking trail, about 2,170 miles (3,500 km) long! It stretches all the way from Georgia to Maine. The Appalachian Trail passes just 0.3 miles (0.5 km) southeast of Rocky Mountain's summit.
  • The Blue Ridge Parkway: This is a scenic road known for its amazing views. It passes about 0.6 miles (1 km) northwest of the mountain. Many people drive along this parkway to see the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
