History of Rogers

In the 1880s, a man named Thomas Rogers sold some of his land to the Great Northern Railroad. This land was part of Hassan Township at the time. The new train station became a useful stop for moving timber from the area. This helped a new community start to grow.

When St. Martin Catholic Church and a school were built, Rogers became more important locally. New businesses opened, and the town grew into a local center. In 1914, Rogers officially became a city.

The city grew slowly for many years. Then, in 1972, Interstate 94 was built right through Rogers. This new highway made it easy to get to Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Because of this, more businesses like Graco and Reinhart FoodService opened in Rogers.

These new jobs helped the population grow. As more people moved in, Rogers needed more land. So, it started to take in more and more land from Hassan Township. Hassan Township fully joined Rogers on January 1, 2012.

Some families who helped found the town, like the Scharbers, are still important in the community today. Otto Scharber owned several local businesses, including a grocery store and a hardware store. His family still runs a John Deere dealership.

Joining Hassan Township

On January 1, 2012, Hassan Township officially became part of Rogers. Hassan Township was the last township in Hennepin County. Talks about Rogers and Hassan Township joining together had been happening since the 1970s.

A formal agreement was approved on December 30, 2003. Later, in 2008, the Rogers City Council and the Hassan Town Board decided to make the annexation happen sooner, by January 1, 2012. This was the third and final step of the annexation. After this, the population of Rogers grew to over 11,000 residents.
