History of Rose Hill
Early Times
For thousands of years, the Great Plains of North America were home to nomadic Native American groups. These groups moved around to hunt and find food.
From the 1500s to the 1700s, France claimed a lot of land in North America. In 1762, after a big war called the French and Indian War, France secretly gave its land, known as New France, to Spain. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Fontainebleau.
The 1800s
In 1802, Spain gave most of this land back to France. Then, in 1803, the United States bought a huge area from France. This deal was called the Louisiana Purchase. It included most of the land that is now Kansas. The United States paid about 2.83 cents per acre for this land.
In 1854, the Kansas Territory was set up. This was a step towards Kansas becoming a state. In 1861, Kansas officially became the 34th U.S. state.
In 1855, Butler County was created. The land where Rose Hill is today was part of this new county. The first post office in Rose Hill opened in 1874. The city of Rose Hill was officially founded in 1892.
