The Rosneath Peninsula is a piece of land almost surrounded by water in the west of Scotland. It's located in an area called Argyll and Bute. Long ago, it was part of Dunbartonshire. This peninsula sits between two important bodies of water: the Firth of Clyde and the Gare Loch on its east side, and the Clyde and Loch Long on its west side.

Exploring the Rosneath Peninsula's Shape

The Rosneath Peninsula is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) long. We measure this from the very top of the Gare Loch. At its widest point, the peninsula stretches about 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) across. A special imaginary line on Earth, called the 56th parallel north, crosses the southern part of the peninsula.

Where Does the Name Rosneath Come From?

The peninsula gets its name from the small village of Rosneath, which is on its eastern side. However, the biggest towns here are Kilcreggan and Cove. These two villages are right next to each other at the very tip of the peninsula.

During the Victorian era, which was a long time ago, this area became very popular. Rich business people from Glasgow loved to visit. They built fancy holiday homes all along the coast. Rosneath Castle was even home to Princess Louise for a while. She was the daughter of Queen Victoria. Sadly, like many large old houses in this area, Rosneath Castle has been taken down.

Villages and Important Sites on the Peninsula

On the western side of the peninsula, you'll find the village of Coulport. This is where a special place called the Royal Navy Armaments Depot is located. It's a base for the Royal Navy. On the eastern side, there's a small village called Rahane. From Rahane, you can see the HMNB Clyde base. This base is important for the United Kingdom's nuclear weapons.

Getting Around the Rosneath Peninsula

You can reach the peninsula in a couple of ways. One way is by road, using the B833. This road goes from Garelochhead all the way to Coulport. Another way is by taking a ferry from Gourock to Kilcreggan. However, this ferry is only for people walking, not for cars. During the summer, a famous old paddle steamer called PS Waverley sometimes stops at Kilcreggan pier.

The B833 road follows the coastline. But there are also two other roads that cross the peninsula. These roads don't have numbers. One is a smaller road for local people, connecting Ardpeaton to Rahane. The other is much bigger and is mostly used for military vehicles. It connects Coulport to Faslane.

Recently, the Rosneath Peninsula has become a great place for cyclists. You can ride your bike all the way around the peninsula. You can even use the military road for part of your trip.
