Rossella's Fencing Journey

Early Life and Training

When Rossella was a child, she enjoyed ballet and rhythmic gymnastics. She started fencing at age seven. Her father encouraged her because her brother already went to a fencing school. Rossella trained at AS Methodos Catania. Her coach, Gianni Sperlinga, still coaches her today.

Becoming a Junior Champion

In 2004, Rossella joined the Italian national team for young fencers. She won the Cadet European Championships in 2007. The next year, she won the Cadet World Championships in her home country, Italy. She also won gold medals in both individual and team events at the Junior European Championships in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, she won the European Under-23 Championships.

Joining the Senior Team

Rossella joined the senior national team in the 2010–11 season. At the 2011 European Championships, she reached the quarter-finals. She won her first World Cup medal, a bronze, in Doha. She then won a gold medal in Rio de Janeiro.

Rossella competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics. She was very close to winning an individual medal but lost in the quarter-finals. Her team finished seventh in the team event.

World Champion Success

In the 2013–14 season, Rossella won the World Fencing Championships. She beat some tough opponents, including Olympic champions. She made history by winning the individual épée world title again in 2015. This made her the first woman to win back-to-back world titles in this event since 1999! She also won the World Cup in the 2014–2015 season.

In 2022, Rossella won a silver medal at the European Fencing Championships. She also earned a bronze medal at the World Fencing Championships that same year.
