Early Life and Family
Khan was born on November 2, 1965, in New Delhi into a Muslim family. His father, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian independence activist from Peshawar. His mother, Lateef Fatima, was the daughter of a senior government engineer. Khan has described himself as "half Hyderabadi (mother), half Pathan (father), and some Kashmiri (grandmother)".
Khan grew up in the Rajendra Nagar neighborhood of New Delhi. He went to St. Columba's School, where he was good at his studies and sports like hockey and football. He wanted to be a professional athlete, but a shoulder injury stopped him from playing. Instead, he started acting in school plays.
He went to Hansraj College to study economics but spent a lot of time at a theatre group, where he learned to act. His father passed away from cancer in 1981, and his mother died in 1991 from diabetes. After their deaths, Khan took care of his older sister, Shahnaz Lalarukh.
Acting Career
1988–1992: Starting on TV and in Movies

After his mother's death in 1991, Khan decided to move to Mumbai to become a full-time actor in Bollywood. His first movie was Deewana (1992), which was a big hit and started his film career.
