What Does SVT Barn Look Like?
The channel has changed its look over the years. Here are some of the logos it has used:
What Shows Can You Watch on SVT Barn?
SVT Barn has many different types of shows. They are made for kids of all ages. Some shows are made in Sweden, and others come from different countries.
Shows for Younger Kids
In the mornings, SVT Barn often shows programs for preschoolers. These shows are usually in Swedish. Sometimes they are originally in Swedish, or they are dubbed (their voices are changed) into Swedish. Some shows are even silent!
It can be expensive to make new shows or dub old ones. So, many of the morning programs have been shown on SVT before. Some classic shows you might see include Professor Balthazar, Doctor Snuggles, and the Alfons Åberg films. Pingu was also a popular show on the channel.
Shows for Older Kids and Teens
SVT Barn also has animated shows for older children. These often keep their original sound. For example, you might see the Japanese anime Cardcaptors or American cartoons like Animaniacs and AAAHH!!! Real Monsters.
There is a Swedish version of AAAHH!!! Real Monsters, but it is shown on another channel called Nickelodeon Scandinavia. Other animated shows on SVT Barn include the animated Mr. Bean, Garfield and Friends, Code Lyoko, Martin Mystery, The Rubbish World of Dave Spud, and Oggy and The Cockroaches.
Live-Action Series from Around the World
The channel also buys drama series from many countries. These include shows from Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Canada, France, and Germany.
Many Australian drama series have been shown on SVT Barn. These include Mirror, Mirror, Search for Treasure Island, Home Farm Twins, The Saddle Club, and Ocean Star. From the United States, you might find PBS series like Ramona and Nickelodeon shows like The Secret World of Alex Mack. The UK has contributed series like Woof! and Press Gang.
In recent years, many live-action shows that used to be broadcast in their original language are now dubbed into Swedish.
Junior Eurovision Song Contest
From 2011 to 2014, SVT Barn was the channel that showed the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Before that, it was shown on SVT 1.
How Can You Watch SVT Barn?
When Barnkanalen first started, you could watch it through satellite with Canal Digital. It was also available on some digital cable services. It was the first channel to be broadcast for free on the digital terrestrial network.
In 2003, an agreement was made for the channel to be available on the Viasat satellite platform. A few days before that, SVT allowed cable providers to change the channel and convert it to analogue PAL for their systems.
Some cable companies used to charge extra for the channel. But a few years later, an agreement was made. SVT would pay the copyright costs. This meant Barnkanalen (and other channels like Kunskapskanalen and SVT24) became available in the basic analogue packages. This happened on July 1, 2005, and it helped many more people watch the channel.
