History of San Bartolomé Milpas Altas
In the 1540s, a bishop named Francisco Marroquín divided the church's control in Guatemala's central valley. He gave parts to two different religious groups: the Order of Preachers (also known as Dominicans) and the Franciscans. San Bartolomé Milpas Altas was part of the area given to the Dominicans.
By 1638, the Dominicans had organized their many religious areas into six main groups, each centered around a large church called a convent. These convents helped manage the smaller church areas, known as doctrines or curatos.

Later, in 1754, a historian named Domingo Juarros wrote about a big change. By order of King Carlos III, all the religious areas managed by the regular clergy (like the Dominicans) were given to the secular clergy. This meant that priests who lived among the people, rather than in monasteries, took over these church duties.
