Sand art and play facts for kids

Sand art is all about shaping sand into cool artistic forms. This can be a sand sculpture, a sandpainting, or even sand bottles. A sandcastle is a famous type of sand sculpture. It looks like a tiny building, often a castle. This fun art form first became popular in Hawaii.
The main things you need for sand art are sand and water. You can find lots of these on a sandy beach or in a sandpit. Beaches with tides often have sand that is not the best for tall structures. Good sand for sculpting usually has a bit of silt and clay. These help the sand grains stick together better.
Kids often make sandcastles just for fun. But there are also big sand-sculpting contests for adults! These events feature huge, detailed creations. One of the tallest sandcastles ever made in a contest was 18 feet tall. Imagine how much sand and water that took!

How to Build Sand Art
Sand grains will stick together if the sand is fine enough. Dry sand is loose, but wet sand becomes sticky. This happens when you use the right amount of sand and water. Water creates tiny "bridges" between the sand grains. This is due to something called surface tension.
If the sand dries out or gets too wet, your sand art might change shape. Sometimes, parts can even "slide" down! To make strong sand art, it's important to have a mix of fine and coarse sand. Sand grains that are very round (from being in the sea or rivers) don't stick as well. They slide past each other more easily. So, finding the best sand helps create strong, lasting sculptures.
Shovels and buckets are the main tools for making sandcastles and sculptures. Some people even use only their hands! You can make a simple sandcastle by filling a bucket with damp sand. Then, flip it upside-down on the beach and lift the bucket off. For bigger projects, you can bring water from the sea in a bucket. Sometimes, builders use wood or plastic to hold sand in place. These are called "forms."
Sand sculpting has become very popular, especially on beaches. Hundreds of contests happen every year around the world. Artists use advanced techniques. Some amazing achievements have even made it into the Guinness World Records. Many sand sculptors come from other art fields. But a few earn their living just from working with sand!
Drip Castles
A different kind of sandcastle is the drip castle. To make one, you mix sand with water until it's very wet. Then, you let it drip from your hand held high. Some people call this "dribbling." When the wet sand lands on other sand, it creates cool, unique shapes.

Sand Art Events
From 1989 to 2009, there was a World Championship in Sand Sculpture. It was held in Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia, Canada. This event was also known as "Harrisand". It had categories for solo artists, duos, and teams. Other countries now host their own big sand art competitions.
The world's tallest sandcastle was built in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in 2007. It was 49.55 feet (15.1 meters) tall! It took a team 10 days to build and used 300 truckloads of sand. This record was broken in 2019 in Rügen, Germany. A new castle was unveiled that was 58 feet tall! International artists built it using 11,000 tons of sand.
The world record for the most sand angels made at once happened in Ludington, Michigan. On June 10, 2017, 1,387 people made sand angels at the same time! This was almost four times the old record. They kept making angels for 30 seconds, which was twice as long as the previous record.
Playing with Sand

Playing with sand is one of the best parts of a sandy beach, especially for kids! It offers more ways to play than a regular sandbox.
You can build a mountain, dig a wikt:pit (sometimes finding clay or water!), or create canals and tunnels. You can also make bridges or sculptures of people or animals. Some people even build tiny scale models of buildings.
Be careful with large tunnels you can enter. They can be very dangerous! Children and adults can get hurt if these tunnels collapse. This can happen because of the sand's weight or if the tide comes in. Sometimes, people build a dam to hold back water. They might also build huge sandcastles with thick walls to protect them from the sea.
Burying someone up to their neck in sand, or burying yourself, is another popular beach activity. Always make sure an adult is watching and that the person can get out easily and safely.
A sand glass is a cool display with different colors of sand in water between two sheets of glass. Unlike sand paintings, you turn a sand glass to make new shapes. The sand, often black and a light color, moves into new patterns each time you turn it. These are found all over the world in many colors and sizes.
