Sandgate is in the northwestern part of Bennington County. It is completely located within the Taconic Mountains. These mountains are a range that stretches across parts of New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts.
Neighboring Towns and States
Sandgate shares its borders with several other towns. To the north, you'll find the town of Rupert. To the east is Manchester. South of Sandgate is Arlington. On its western side, Sandgate borders the town of Salem in Washington County, New York.

The highest point in Sandgate is Bear Mountain. Its peak reaches about 3,301 feet (1,006 meters) high. This mountain is located in the northern part of the town. The eastern part of Sandgate includes the lower slopes of Equinox Mountain. The very top of Equinox Mountain is actually in the neighboring town of Manchester.
The town covers a total area of about 109.3 square kilometers (42.2 square miles). Most of this area, about 109.1 square kilometers (42.1 square miles), is land. Only a small part, about 0.2 square kilometers (0.1 square miles), is water. All the water in Sandgate flows into the Batten Kill. This river is a branch of the Hudson River in New York.
