Sandro Rosell's Time at FC Barcelona
Sandro Rosell has had a long history with FC Barcelona. He played important roles in the club's management.
Joining the Barcelona Board in 2003
In 2003, Sandro Rosell teamed up with Joan Laporta to help Laporta become the president of Barcelona. They won the election by a large number of votes.
One of their big promises was to bring the famous football player David Beckham to the club. However, Beckham decided to join Barcelona's big rival, Real Madrid. Because of this, the Barcelona board decided to try and sign the Brazilian star Ronaldinho from Paris Saint-Germain.
Barcelona was competing with Manchester United to sign Ronaldinho. Many people believe Ronaldinho chose Barcelona because he was friends with Rosell. Rosell used to work for Nike in Brazil. Ronaldinho's arrival was very important for Barcelona.
Rosell later resigned as vice-president of sports in June 2005. This happened even though Barcelona won the league title that year. He felt that Laporta was not following their original plans for the club.
After Leaving the Board in 2005
After leaving his role, Rosell continued to follow Barcelona closely. He sometimes shared his opinions about the club's direction. He supported some of Laporta's decisions, like choosing Pep Guardiola as manager. He also supported the club's agreement with UNICEF.
Becoming President in 2010
On 27 June 2008, Sandro Rosell announced that he wanted to become the president of Barcelona in 2010. This was when Joan Laporta's term as president was ending.
On 13 June 2010, Rosell was elected president of Barcelona. He won with more than 60% of the votes from the club members. He officially took over from Joan Laporta on 1 July 2010.
Rosell's Presidency at Barcelona
During his time as president, Sandro Rosell oversaw many important events for FC Barcelona. In July 2012, he announced that the club had made record profits of €45 million. This was a big achievement for the club's finances.
On 23 January 2014, Rosell resigned from his position as president. This decision came after questions arose about the cost of signing the Brazilian football player Neymar. His successor, Josep Maria Bartomeu, took over the role.
