Sandro Rosell's Time at FC Barcelona
Joining the Barcelona Team in 2003
In 2003, Sandro Rosell and Joan Laporta worked together. They wanted Laporta to become the president of FC Barcelona. They won the election by a lot of votes.
Rosell tried to bring famous football player David Beckham to the club. He was very hopeful it would happen. But Beckham decided to join Barcelona's big rival team, Real Madrid.
So, the Barcelona team decided to try and sign Ronaldinho. He was a Brazilian star player from Paris Saint-Germain. Another big club, Manchester United, also wanted Ronaldinho. Barcelona really needed Ronaldinho because of money problems. Many people believe Ronaldinho chose Barcelona because he was friends with Rosell. Rosell used to work for Nike in Brazil.
Rosell left his job as vice-president of sports in June 2005. This happened even though Barcelona won the league title that year. He said that Laporta was not following their original plans for the club.
After Leaving the Board in 2005
In 2006, Rosell wrote a book called Benvingut al món real (which means Welcome to the real world). This was when Barcelona was about to win the UEFA Champions League. The book seemed to criticize club president Laporta. It promised to share the reasons why Rosell had resigned.
In 2006, there was a chance for new elections at Barcelona. Club members said Joan Laporta had finished his four-year term. But Rosell did not try to become president against his former friend. When asked if he would run in the future, Rosell said he would "never say never."
After he resigned, Rosell often spoke out against Laporta. He said there was "absolute anarchy" in "all areas of the club." However, he did support Laporta's choice of manager, Pep Guardiola. He also supported Laporta's decision to work with UNICEF.
Becoming President in 2010
On 27 June 2008, Sandro Rosell announced he would run for president of Barcelona in 2010. This was when Joan Laporta's term would end. At that time, Laporta was facing a vote of no confidence, which Rosell supported. Laporta even accused Rosell of being behind the vote. Rosell said he was voting against Laporta because the current management was "not independent or transparent or democratic."
On 13 June 2010, Rosell was elected president of Barcelona. He won with more than 60% of the votes from club members. He took over from Joan Laporta on 1 July 2010.
Rosell's Time as President
In July 2012, Rosell announced that Barcelona had made a record profit of €45 million. This was a great achievement, even though the team did not win the league or the Champions League that season.
On 23 January 2014, Rosell resigned as president. This happened after a judge began an investigation related to the signing of Brazilian player Neymar. Rosell's successor, Josep Maria Bartomeu, later said that the actual cost of Neymar's transfer was higher than what Rosell had announced.
